European Parliament member Robert Biedroń stated that journalist Mzia Amaglobeli represents a vital symbol of democratic resistance.
He made the remarks during the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the 2025 Sakharov Prize laureates.
“Mzia Amaglobeli is a crucial symbol of democratic resistance. Through her leadership of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, she has documented democratic backsliding, shrinking civic space, and the repression faced by pro-European protesters in Georgia. Her arrest and two-year imprisonment made her the first female political prisoner since Georgia regained independence, embodying the risks journalists defending freedom face,” Biedroń said.
He added, “The 2025 laureates are journalists who have made significant contributions to the fight for freedom and democracy, creating civic space in their countries. Their courage reflects the values that guide the European Union. These values are universal and must be upheld in the EU and with the same clarity in Belarus, Georgia, and anywhere citizens look to Europe for solidarity in defending democratic freedoms and human rights.”
The 2025 Sakharov Prize laureates include Mzia Amaglobeli, founder and director of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, and Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut.
