Georgian Dream held an event marking the completion of the Georgian Railway modernization project.
“Founded in 1872, Georgian Railway is now entering a new phase, 153 years later a phase that meets the challenges of the 21st century, technological standards, and the new realities of global trade. The project included the construction of new bridges and tunnels, more than 100 engineering structures, about 100 kilometers of new track, and the installation of safety systems meeting international standards. This is one of the largest investments ever made in Georgia’s modern transport sector,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the event.
He noted that the project has increased the railway’s capacity, reduced operational costs, strengthened safety, and improved passenger comfort.
Kobakhidze also spoke about Georgia’s role in the Middle Corridor, emphasizing that in the context of global geopolitical and economic transformations, where supply chains are changing, the importance of safe, predictable, and reliable transport routes is growing.
“In this context, Georgia’s role must be strengthened with strategic decisions. The government’s initiatives the Anaklia port, railway modernization, and east-west road infrastructure reflect this policy. Our future lies in intermodal transit, integrating all types of transport into a single ecosystem. Digitization of logistics processes is also essential and actively underway. The Middle Corridor is not just an alternative route, but a new standard for connecting Europe and Asia. Our goal is for Georgia to become a key, reliable, and indispensable link a country ensuring fast, safe, and uninterrupted cargo movement. Our government’s mission is to make the Middle Corridor the most reliable, safe, and efficient corridor in the region,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that efforts are underway to optimize railway operations, remove administrative barriers, and digitize services. As a result, travel time on the Tbilisi-Batumi section is expected to be reduced by half an hour for the summer 2026 season.
